An understanding of spatial cognition must include an account of systems of spatial cognition that are basic, central, and pervasive, and therefore of wide applicability within- and across-species. This group focuses on systems important in representing, generating, or processing spatial knowledge that do not require direct reference to external symbol systems. These systems can be broadly grouped into visualization (involving entities that either are manipulable or can be treated as such) and navigation (involving regions that either are at a scale at which humans can traverse or that can be treated as such). We emphasize projects that are relevant to the understanding and assessment of individual differences, the development of expertise, and the understanding of malleability.
The aims of the Representations and Processes working group are:
To understand fundamental representations in spatial cognition.
To understand fundamental processes in spatial cognition.
To understand how spatial skills are related to STEM achievement.
To discover how fundamental representations and processes are instantiated in the brain and how behavioral change is mapped onto changes at the neural level.
